Is Lifting Dangerous for Kids?

Short answer: No. In a supervised and well controlled environment lifting is one of the safest activities an youth athlete can do.

Here is 8 year old Malia learning how to back squat. If you watch close you will notice she takes a breath before each squat, and braces her core appropriately. Her hips go back, her knees track out ,she maintains a strong neutral spine, and she keeps the weight distributed evenly between the big toe, pinky toe, and heel.

The skill of learning how to properly align your body and brace properly to output force will aid in any sport an athlete does. Lifting doesn’t just make kids better at a particular sport; it makes them better athletes which transfers to EVERY sport.
